St Leonards & St Ives Tennis Club

history

The Club was founded in 1978 when there was a proposal to build courts adjacent to the Village Hall. The official opening of the original tennis facilities of three hard courts was in April 1979. Club activities were confined to the open air or a small annexe of the Village Hall.

The Club has always been very particular in ensuring that its members have the best possible facilities, so in 1991 a fourth court was added and the other three courts were all upgraded.

In 1992 lights were errected for 2 courts to enable tennis to be played all year round.

The Club continued to grow in membership, playing strength and friendliness but all the planning was for a Clubhouse in the future. This became a reality with help from the local Parish Council, a lot of hard work by Club members, the Lottery and other sports grants. The Clubhouse was opened by Maria Bueno in May 1998. It was the climax of a very successful Play Tennis 98 week.

In 2001 floodlights were errected on the 2 remaining courts to enable tennis to be played all year on all 4 courts.

In September 2005, all four courts were resurfaced with astroturf and now provide players with a 1st class playing surface.
